Websites & Books

My Library
9 Heads by Nancy Riegelman
A huge book on drawing fashion figures and clothing.  I really like it, but it definitely does not fit on my regular book shelf!
I have only had a chance to skim this book so far.  I wanted a book on how to do appliqué well.  She focuses on flowers, but it can be applied to other images you would like to do.
The Basic of Corset Building by Linda Sparks (1st edition)
Basic in corset building.  The author owns a corset supply shop in Santa Monica.
by Edna Bishop and Marjorie Arch
A vintage book given to me by a friend.  Amazing vintage book that covers fitting, cutting, pressing, and sewing methods.  Wonderful detailed pictures.
A hardback, spiraled bound book of sewing clothing.  Clear and detailed step by step instructions.
Costume Craftwork on a Budget by Tan Huaxixiang
Cool book on creating wigs, masks, and touches the subject of costumes.
Couture Sewing Techniques by Claire Shaeffer
Really great book about couture techniques and hand sewing.  You can also get the companion DVD, Couture Techniques Workshop DVD: Basics With Claire Shaeffer
Cute book on the basics of patternmaking.
She uses methods that she learned in Japan.  Out of print, but a really wonderful book that is a hardback and spiral bound.  Sometimes you can find them with the original card stock triangle and hip curve.
Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm
Simple, yet very informative book on drawing the human body.
The Embroiderer's Handbook by Margie Bauer
A detailed book on how to different embroidery stitches with step by step pictures.
The Embroidery Stitch Bible by Betty Barnden
A hardback, spiral bound book.  Each embroidery or cross stitch is pictured with a diagram showing you how to create the stitch.
Fabric Science by J.J. Pizzuto (8th edition)
A school textbook on analyzing fabric.  It comes with a swatch book/activity of a variety of fabrics.  Unfortunately for me, the class did not have a lab at the time so I did not really get to fully utilize the activity book.  :/  The new college I am attending this year offers a fabric science which I definitely plan on taking.  Would love to do the lab this time!
Fashion Artist by Sandra Burke
Basic in drawing fashion figures in different poses.  Has a variety of examples from different artists.
Fashion Sewing for Everyone by Adele Margolis
Vintage book on sewing garments together.
Goes over colors, fabric choices, different ways to do hand printing and digital printing.
An awesome hatmaking book with detail instructions and includes basic hat pattern ideas.  They are roughly drawn and you have to enlarge them.  I created a driver's cap for my husband.  It took me about 4 months and about 15 rejects, but I finally made the perfect hat!  I will eventually include my hat pattern to my blog.
A vintage book given to me by a friend.  Goes over the basics of sewing garments, but mostly includes cross stitching, knitting, crocheting, and hand weaving.
Guide to Fashion Sewing by Connie Amaden-Crawford (3rd edition)
Step by step guide on the basics of fitting and sewing together garments.
How to Make Clothes that Fit and Flatter by Adele Margolis
A great book on what looks good on different body types and how to alter patterns to create it.
How To Make Sewing Patterns by Donald McCunn
Very good book on patternmaking.  He offers independent online classes, but is retiring from teaching the end of the year.  http://patternmaking-classes.com/  You can also find him in his book's forum.
Let There Be Clothes by Lynn Schnurnberger
Fun book going over fashion throughout history up until the 1990's.
McCall's Complete Book of Dressmaking by Marian Corey
Vintage book that goes over measurements, altering patterns, sewing the garments together.
by Winifred Aldrich (3rd edition)
Goes over basic sizes for children or you can take your own measurements. Has many designs that you can follow to create your own children's patterns.
Wonderful guide on fitting, alterations, and sewing.  Some of the projects require you buy patterns to do them, but the pictured steps give you an idea of how to put together different types of garments.
Pattern Drafting for Dressmaking by Pamela Stringer
Excellent vintage book on creating a variety of different garments from scratch.  However, it is in metric if that is an issue for you.  It also has detailed charts on taking measurements for women, men, and children, but only touches the subject for pattern making on the latter two.
Patternmaking by Dennic Chunman Lo
A step by step book on patternmaking.  Explains everything in detail from how to why.
(E-book-Openlibrary.org)
Sew U by Wendy Mullin
Hardback, spiral bound book with detailed instructions and includes basic patterns to create the garments in the book.
Sew U: Home Stretch by Wendy Mullin
Hardback, spiral bound book similar to Sew U, but concentrating on sewing knit fabrics.
I bought this book a long time ago because I wanted to make the cute beret.  There are some other ideas for house hold items.
Fun book on making stuffed softies.  Includes overlapping patterns you have to copy, not too cluttered though.
Tailoring Suits: The Professional Way by Clarence Poulin
I haven't gotten a chance to use this book yet.  As soon as I feel confident enough, I eventually want to try my hand at tailoring a man's suit.  I have seen this book and Stanley Hostek's tailoring series recommended on a lot of forums.
The Vogue Sewing Book (3rd edition)
A vintage book given to me by a friend.  Basics of fitting and sewing together garments.  It even has a chapter focusing on menswear!
